Finlarig Castle is a stunning castle ruin located near Loch Tay, in the village of Killin.
Despite being such a beautiful ruin, it has a dark history. The castle was built in the early 17th century by “Black Duncan” Campbell, the 7th Laird of Glenorchy.
The most notorious story associated with this castle is the stone lined rectangular pit located on the north side of the castle. It’s said that this was a beheading pit- where convicted commoners would kneel down and promptly have their heads chopped off by the executioners axe.
This is most likely fiction however, as there’s a high chance the pit was actually used as a water storage tank given its proximity to the kitchen.
